Emily and her father are welcomed by peasants living in the shadows of the Villeroi chateau. Monsieur St. Aubrey is "agitated" to discover this, and mentions that they must be "so near Le-Blanc" (95). The Villeroi estate is the most haunting setting provided in the novel at the point of its debut. The mystery of the Villeroi family later plays a significant role in the novel.
