Leiden

Leiden is located in the province of South Holland and is known as a university city. One of Europe’s most important science centers, Leiden University was established in 1575. Descartes studied at Leiden University. The city was nicknamed “city of books” in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Rembrandt was born and trained here. Today, people gather to celebrate 3 Oktober, which celebrates the end of the 1574 Spanish siege.
