Lismore Castle

Lismore Castle is located in Lismore, County Waterford in the republic of Ireland. Currently, the Duke of Devonshire resides there when in Ireland. Historically, the castle has been home to various families dating back to at least the 12th century. The Dukes of Devonshire have been in posession of the castle since the 18th century when Lady Charlotte Boyle married the Marquess of Hartington, who eventually became the the 4th Duke of Devonshire. The architecture of the castle is noted in "Ireland Makes Irish" by Elizabeth Bowen. She writes, "All our architecture is not Italian-square: in the decades around 1800 Gothic romanticism, also, invaded Ireland, giving us our sense of famous castles. Some (as, for instance, Lismore, County Waterford) were raised on old Anglo-Norman fortified sites – the “modern” castle incorporating ancient wells, deep-sunk networks of rock passages, battlements, and keeps with walls eight foot thick" (Bowen). Today, the castle is available to rent for a vacation, though it will cost you a very pretty penny.
