Liverpool Central Station

The Liverpool Central Station was built by John Fowler on Ranelagh St. England in 1874.  The station was built with an arched shed on the outside that was 65 ft. high and 164 ft. wide.  The building was 3 stories tall and was made of sandstone.  Information about this railway is sparse due to it being part of the Beeching Axe which closed several train stations and lines because they were becoming too inefficient.  When the Liverpool Central Station first opened, only two platforms were available to patrons and the walls were faulty.  In 1882, they had to start strengthening the walls of the Liverpool Central Station to maintain the safety of the riders.  The train station was part of a strike in 1911.  The Disused Train Station Website says that,  “the Liverpool General Transport Strike reached its zenith. Thousands of workers including railwaymen, who came out on 7 August, joined the strike which created major civil unrest that was described as ‘near to revolution’. Central station was blockaded by strikers, which halted train services.”  Then in 1913 there was a train crash that ended up killing three people that were in a stationary train.  The Beeching Axe closed three stations including: Liverpool Central High Level Station, Woodside Station, and the Birkenhead Station.  The train station officially closed in 1972.  While the Liverpool central station was in use, they created the Liverpool Underground Central Station in 1892 which still stands today and has 3 working platforms.  The traffic from the Liverpool Central High Level Station ended up going to the Liverpool Lime Station.  The high level station ended up being demolished after it was no longer in use.  The Liverpool Central Station will always be known as one if the first stations built during this time of Industrial Revolution.  It has a lot of history that we can look back on even though the actual building no longer exists anymore.
