London England

London is a very well-known city in England, and this is also the home of the United Kingdom's government and financial center. To this day, London is a very popular and also a wealthy city. In the beginning, it was ruled by Romans from 43 AD to the fifth century. At this time, the population was 50,000. However, the Vikings had attacked London more than once in the ninth century, though Danish settlers then came to the town and helped establish London as a trading center. One important aspect of London's history, of course, is the industrial revolution. New machines had been invented throughout this time, and new factories had opened to create and polish machines. As the population grew throughout this time, more jobs had opened up, but there were upsetting consequences. Cities in England were overcrowding and more pollution was the result of the industrial revolution. On top of all this, more crimes were occurring. However, one thing to come out of this time was the fact that children were being forced into unhealthy working conditions, and the safety of the workers was not a top priority. It costed less to hire children, but they also had smaller bodies and hands which put them at an advantage to use some of the dangerous machines. Oftentimes, parents struggling might put their children to the workforce to bring home extra money rather than keep them in school, which is another reason as to why children were working in England. While London did end up with a big population and ended up with a bigger trading center as a result of the industrial revolution, it still put children at risk as a result and had upsetting consequences. During this time period, some individuals such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote about the labor that was occurring, and how children were being treated. "The Cry of the Children" is Browning's poem that uses pathos to perhaps convince people of what the children have to go through as a result of working a full time job instead of going to school and not being put at risk to work dangerous equipment all day long.
