Shelley places the ficitonal town of Longfield in Essex.

1. Ethel is born

"In the flattest and least agreeable part of the county of Essex, about five miles from the sea, is situated a village or small town, which may be known in these pages by the name of Longfield." (49)

7. Ethel arrives at Longfield with Elizabeth (168)

“Both made the dead Lodore the focus to concentrate, and the mirror to reflect, all their sensations and experience. He visited their dreams by night, his name was their study, their pastime, their sole untiring society.” (170)

Ethel becomes conusmed with grief.

24. Return to Longfield without Villiers (279)

Ethel gains a new appreciation of Longfield separate from her greif over her father. 

29. Longfield (444)

Ethel returns to Longfield and finds her mother there. They reunite.
