Margate is a seaside town in the district of Thanet in Kent, South East England. J. M. W. Turner immortalized the town in a series of drawings in 1786 and remained a regular visitor until his death in 1851. William Makepeace Thackeray used Margate as the setting for his early unfinished novel A Shabby Genteel Story (1857).
