Montreal is a city located in the Canadian province of Quebec. It has long been a cultural and commercial center, and it hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics. The First Nations people located in the area four thousand years ago, and the Saint Lawrence Iroquoians also occupied the land hundreds of years before French settlers colonized the area in the seventeenth century. In 1611, Samuel de Champlain established a fur trading outpost on the Island of Montreal. Montreal was incorporated as a city in 1832.
