New York 3, 5

1830s-1840s | Broadway and Ann Henry A. Papprill, after John William Hill. New York from the Steeple of St. Paul’s Church, Looking East, South, and West. 1848.

New York functions as the arrival and departure point for America in Lodore.

3. Lord Lodore arrives with the three-year-old Ethel in America

5. Lord Lodore and Ethel stay in New York as they prepare to return to England

“Father and daughter were on their way to New York, having bid an eternal adieu to the savannas and forests of the west. For a time, Lodore’s thoughts were haunted by the image of the home they had left.” (139)

Ethel also longs for Illinois later in the novel, especially during the time of her financial troubles with Villiers.

New York is the staging point where Lodore prepares for their reentry into English high Society, and the place where Ethel first really interacts with people other than her father such as Fanny Derham.
