Newfoundland
Newfoundland and Labrador is the easternmost province in Canada. It joined Confederation in 1949, though it had spent much of the previous century as a self-governing state of the British Empire (and eventually, commonwealth). Its most populous city and capital is St. John’s. Newfoundland itself is an island and is the most populous portion of the province. The island forms the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
