Oxford University is one of the most well known Universities in the world. Oxford is located in England and one of it's most significant landmarks. It's first teachings goes all the way to 1096. This schools has had many brilliant minds in and out of its doors. The 18th century is very much known for some of those brilliant minds, as well as it's scientific discoveries. 

Frankenstein has just a few mentions of Oxford University, all coming from Henry Clerval and Victor Frankenstein's trip before Frankenstein got married (VOL III Chapter II). The two visit Oxford and Henry is immediately impressed, while Victor really isn't. This contrast very much reflects the characters. Henry is a wealthy, brilliant mind, and prefers to do things the proper way, whereas Victor did not even commit to a college education and deals greatly in the shadows.
