Pompeii

Pompeii was a Roman city located near the modern city of Naples in southern Italy. It was destroyed by the eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, but much of the site was preserved under the volcanic ash. The site was rediscovered first in 1599 and then more fully in 1738. Excavations were conducted in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
