Riots at Bristol
30 Oct 1831
On 30 October 30 1831, a crowd of 10,000 took possession of Queen Square in Bristol, as rioting in nine cities and towns marked the failure of the second version of the First Reform Bill in the House of Lords.
Queen Square is a garden square in the center of Bristol. Finished in 1727, the square was originally a fashionable residential area. Much of the north and west sides of the square were destroyed during the Bristol Riots in 1831, and were then rebuilt. Many of the buildings in the square are historically listed, and most of them today are used as offices. Related BRANCH Article: Carolyn Vellenga Berman, “On the Reform Act of 1832”
