Runnymede, England

Runnymede is a district that lies in Southeastern England. It is a largely rural area to the west of London. Runnymede features the beautiful meadows that border the River Thames, as well as a considerable section of Windsor Great Park. The meadows are celebrated as the place where King John put the Magna Carta into action. The Magna Carta was first created to provide individual liberties to groups of English people, in an effort to avoid a civil war in the 13th century. To this day, Runnymede and the Magna Carta is regarded as a powerful and infulential politial document, and it can be seen referenced in literature and in polotics to this day. For example, in Barbauld's poem "Eighteen Hundred and Eleven", it references Runnymede, saying, "From Runnymede to send a patriot's prayer" (Barbauld). In the footnotes of the poem, it further explains the mention of Runnymede, mentioning its political signifigance. Linked is a picture of a memorial to the Magna Carta in Runnymede.
