Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain

The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain is located in Piccadilly Circus, in the City of Westminster, London, England. The memorial was originally located at the center of the Circus but has been located at the southeastern side since World War II. The memorial was erected in 1892-1893 and commemorates Lord Shaftesbury, a politician, philanthropist, and social reformer. The fountain’s sculpture represents the Greek god Anteros, the god of requited love, and was given the name of The Angel of Christian Charity. However, the status is often mistaken for Eros, the god of sensual love and desire.
