Southampton is a port city on the southern coast of England. It was connected to London by rail in 1840 and became known as “the Gateway to the Empire.” The RMS Titanic set sail from Southampton in 1912, as did the Mayflower in 1620. During World War II, Southampton was one of the departure points for the D-Day invasion.
