Tokyo

Tokyo is the capital and most populous city in Japan. It is the seat of Japan’s national government. Though originally a fishing village named Edo, Tokyo rose in prominence as a political center in 1603 under the Tokugawa shogunate. It was renamed Tokyo and became the capital in 1868. An earthquake in 1923 devastated the city. It is a major world commerce and business center. It hosted three G7 Summits and the 1964 Summer Olympic Games (as well as the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, which have been postponed to 2021.)
