Troy (Hisarlik, Turkey)

Hisarlik, Turkey is the assumed location of the acient city of Troy. In Greek mythology, Troy was a powerful kingdom until it was destroyed by the Greeks during the Trojan War. The Trojan War was a key part of Greek history and is documented in both the Illiad and the Odyssey. Archeological evidence shows that the city has been inhabited for 4000 years. Throughout its long history, this site has seen a repetitive cycle of cities being built and destroyed, only for a new city to replace that one. In the 19th century, German businessman Heinrich Schliemann was determined to uncover the ancient Troy. Schliemann was not an archeologist and has been greatly criticized for his reckless tactics of excavation and for incorrectly attributing the treasure he found to King Priam. Troy's long history has been a source of curiousity for generations and it has made appearances in many pieces of literature, including Eighteen Hundred and Eleven.

Quote from Eighteen Hundred and Eleven:

"With doubtful caution treads the echoing ground,

And asks where Troy or Babylon is found." (line 258)
