United States (The Remains of the Day)

The United States is a nation in North America. Originally consisting of British colonies, the U.S. gained its independence in 1776 after The Revolutionary War. Today, it is a major player on the world stage politically, socially, and eceonomically.

In The Remains of the Day, America is represented by various American characters that appear throughout the course of the novel. Major ones include Stevens' current employer, Mr. Farraday, who is described as kind and bantering, but "prone to that most irritating of traits in an employer--inconsistency" (Ishiguro 12), and the American senator Mr. Lewis who is involved in Lord Darlington's political discussions and is ostracized when he tries to expose Darlington as a political amateur.
