Vancouver is a major city in the western Canadian province, British Columbia. It is the third most populous metropolitan area in Canada. The original settlement was named Gastown and was founded as part of a sawmill town in 1867. It was renamed in 1886 and became a city. The Canadian transcontinental railway connected Vancouver in 1887. Today, Vancouver is a thriving economic and cultural city. It has been called "Hollywood North," as many movies are filmed there. A new initiative, “Greenest City Action Plan,” seeks to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world by 2020.
