Wildfire by Zane Grey

Subjective Danger on Arizona's Mogollon Rim Trail                                                                               Wildfire

In the story, Wildfire, by Zane Grey, we follow Lucy Bostil and Lin Slone on their travels near the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. Lucy wishes to be free from her father's ambitions. One night, Slone decides to try taking a horse from Lucy's father, and upon failing to do so, runs into Lucy. The two of them help each other with their goals as they fall for each other. The horse, Wildfire, becomes the center of both their passions and is the bridge between the two partners. This story takes place betwenn the late 19th century and the early 20th century. It is never stated which year, specifically, but the world described and outside resources indicate this much to be true. As the story was published in 1916, the story must take palce around this time. Since this story is about love founded upon inheritance, I researched the inheritance laws in the 20th Century and found there were significant changes over the centuries, specifically in the 20th Century. One quote from the Library of Congress states, "Over the course of the twentieth century, the proportion of a decedent’s estate that under intestacy went to the spouse rather than to children or others increased in many common-law jurisdictions." This change is incredibly important because for centuries, everything that a man would give away would go to the next male authority figure, and then it changed to the spouse, and since this change, it is better specified by the decedent.
