Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle, located about 20 miles from the city of London, is one of the longest-occupied royal residences in the world. It was built by William the Conqueror around 1070, after the Norman Conquest of England. It was strategically built overlooking the River Thames for military defense as well as easy access to London, as the river flows right through the city. It has housed many royal family members since the 12th century. It has lived through many wars, fires, and renovations and is still an active residence for the British royal family, as well as a popular tourist destination. It housed many of Britain’s most famous royalty such as Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II and even housed King John while he was signing the Magna Carta. St. George’s Chapel, located in the grounds of the Windsor Castle, houses the remains of many members of the royal family as well.
