In today's class while in our smaller groups I got the opportunity to look into the illistrative novel "The Were-Wolf" by Clemence Housman published in 1896. I was suprised when we were doing our research by the feminist tones presented and even that the novel was written by a woman. When previously looking into victorian texts in my previous years I have noticed an overwhelming oppression of women through the roles that women placed. While looking further into the text I was shocked to learn that while Clemence Housmans brother did the illustrations, she herself did the wood engravings throughout the text and wrote the story . I was reminded of the required reading for class "Two texts, two lands, two looks" In which Lorraine Janzen Kooistra discusses the Bitexuality theory. From that texts I learned that traditionally words are looked at as masculine and illustrations feminine. I thought about this when looking into "The Were-Wolf" in which the words are actually created by a woman and the illustrations by a man. I felt that in this helped reveal another layer of feminism in the novel and challenged the masochist victorian era, particularly in respect to women in the world of literature. Not only did Clemence Housmas take the dominant and masculine role in the creation of a illustrative novel, she also herself did the engravings which also speaks to the feminist tones of the novel. Not only did Clemence Housman take the traditional male role in the novel, her brother took the femine role which it interesting becuase in the progression of feminism in the last hundred years, yes women have grown to be seen as more accepted in male roles but men do not traditionally look to be seen in female roles, it is still a stigma to be broken down along with continueing the fight for feminism and it is so interesting to see the male illustrator take the feminine role.

You may be interested to know that both Laurence and Clemence Housman were active in the feminist cause. Clemence even went to jail for her refusal to pay property taxes until she had the right to vote.
