Birth of Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley, born on August 30, 1797, in London, was an English novelist best known for her novel "Frankenstein". She was the daughter of political philosopher William Godwin and feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft. Her mother died shortly after her birth, leaving her to be raised by her father.

In 1814, Mary met and fell in love with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. They eloped to Europe, facing societal disapproval and personal tragedies, including the deaths of their children. Despite these hardships, Mary continued to write and support Percy in his literary endeavors.

Mary Shelley wrote "Frankenstein" in 1816 during a stay in Switzerland, inspired by a ghost story challenge among friends. The novel was published in 1818 and became a cornerstone of Gothic literature and science fiction.

After Percy's death in 1822, Mary returned to England and focused on her writing and editing Percy's works. She passed away on February 1, 1851, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering female author and a key figure in Romantic literature.
