Archival Speculation

Description:

My dearest,

I am offering this book to you as a gift and as a gratitude of my undying love to you. I present to you, The Rubáiyát of Bridge, written by Carolyn Wells. This entire Rubáiyát is entirely about the card game of bridge, which I know is one of your favorite games. I know that you love the game of bridge, and I  hope you love this book as much as I love you. There were just so many elements that reminded me of you.

Of course, one of the reasons I picked this book to gift to you is its size. It’s small, but not small enough to forget. It’s big, but not big enough to where you can’t take it with you anywhere you go. This book will fit perfectly in your bag, or in your hand, and can serve as a reminder that I am always there.

But another reason I picked this book was its color. The book is green, your favorite color. And while this may not seem like an important feature to brag about, green is your favorite color, like your eyes. This book reminds me of you.

This edition has so many beautiful illustrations, which I thought you would appreciate. These illustrations feature groups of friends coming together and playing bridge. This reminded me of us, and it reminded me of you, seeing you play bridge with your friends. It just made me smile because in all of these photos, I see you.

Even the poems themselves remind me of us. There is one poem that reads, “For, Trump or No = Trump, though with all the Rules, Of different Masters and of different Schools, I’ve played with Players of all Sorts, - but I Have never beaten anything, - but Fools!” This poem reminded me of us, mainly because I  have been known to call my opponents in bridge “fools”.

Perhaps my favorite poem in the entire book is when it reads “The Card no question makes of ayes and noes, but High or Low, as suits the Player shows; But he who Stands Beside you, Looking on, He knows about it all ! He Knows!! He Knows!!” I see us in this poem, and in the illustration that goes with it. I know I am one to look over your shoulder when you play bridge, but I promise to you I’m not doing it because I am trying to cheat. I’m just making sure that you know the cards you have, and that you know what you’re doing.

Forever yours,

Your love
