Beautiful Irregularities
Henri Matisse 1917 Reclining Nude Woman.

Description:

Display Explanation:

In the museum, my three chosen pictures would be placed side by side. This is because these three images are trying to show the uniqueness of their feminine bodies. Starting from the left and going to the right we will have the first picture Delightful Land, Blue Nude in the middle, and then Reclining Nude Woman on the right. The pictures Delightful Land and Blue Nude will be placed close together and will be surrounded by all different kinds of flowers. This is because, in both of these paintings, the women are either lying next to flowers or standing next to them. These flowers in the room will symbolize the sense of joy these females have with their bodies or even celebrate their bodies. However, the last picture, Reclining Nude Woman, will be placed off to the right side with the scenery of a living room or bedroom look. In Reclining Nude Woman, you can see that it relates to the others for the fact of the flowers but also is different because she is inside. Having the painting Reclining Nude Woman in a different setting, I think, gives more of a view to people that women are able to be themselves anywhere they want. Women should be able to feel comfortable in their own bodies because there is no correct or “perfect” body shape. Women should also be able to feel like they can express themselves, sexually, anywhere they are at, in a respectful manner. Moreover, in this section of the museum, a female viewer should be able to feel a sense of fertility, beauty, and nature. As for a male viewer, they are able to see how important a woman's sexuality really is and how they should respect or treat women.

Installation Note:

All the images I will be putting together in the museum, Delightful Land, Reclining Nude Woman, and Blue Nude, have many similarities and many differences. Two images, Delightful Land and Blue Nude will be placed together with a nature theme. And the painting, Reclining Nude Women, will be placed off to the side with a living room or bedroom look. However, some similarities that stood out to me were the flowers and the care for showing off their body. To start off, I will cover the flowers that surround the women in all of the photos. In the painting Blue Nude, the flowers are placed around the upper half of her body. The second image, Reclining Nude Woman, has the flowers in front of the woman who is lying on the floor. And lastly, Delightful Land, has the flowers on the woman's right, and they stand tall enough that she is able to touch them. All of the flowers that are placed in each of the paintings are a symbolization of the power of women to break free from societal constraints and go on their own paths. Having the flowers in these paintings shows that women are able to be themselves and they should not be ashamed. Women are able to express their sexuality anywhere they are at, in a respectful manner. Moreover, All the women in these paintings show they are comfortable in their own bodies. If you can see in the image Reclining Nude Woman, you are able to notice that she does not have a care that her stomach is hanging off to the side. Also in Blue Nude, the woman seems like she is lying on the grass half sat up, and is looking off into the distance. This may be because she heard something or something caught her eye. But she is lying outside in nature with no clothes on, so this signifies that she is comfortable with her body. Lastly, in the painting Delightful Land, the woman is holding onto the flower while she is standing outside in the open. In this painting, the woman is showing that she is also comfortable in her own body because she is outside in nature just like in the painting Blue Nude. However, these three paintings have their differences as well. One difference I have seen with these paintings is the environment. In the painting Delightful Land, the land that she is on is the most different from the other two images. This is because I feel the artist wanted to make the colors stand out. The female is standing in nature, but the ground colors are different from what they would normally be. The color that you can see the most is red and that is because the color red has been used across time and culture to symbolize women's sexuality. We see this color in Reclining Nude Woman as well but, this painting is different from the others because she is lying inside while the others are outside. The other painting, Blue Nude, has a different environment because she seems like she is more hidden with less color surrounding her.
