Casta Painting

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

One of the Casta paintings that I found was this one where we see, what appears to be, a mother, her children, and the father all interacting with one another. The interesting thing about this painting is we see a clear depiction of the mestizaje  because it is clear the children are mixed racially. It appears that the mother is of the Indigenous or Hispanic descent while the father is European. We can also tell a lot about clothing within this painting. The father is dressed in nice European clothing with a hat, sword/knife, and gloves which could indicate he is of a higher social class. Additionally, the mother and her kids are dressed in nice clothing that is possibly representative of her culture. She also has a lot of jewelry and nice headwear which may be another indication that she and her family are of a higher social class. The representation of the mestizaje and the mother caring for her children lines up accurately with the concepts within Murmur of the Bees.
