In The Romance of a Shop, Phyllis and Sidney Darrel planned to leave together on a train to Italy via the Charing Cross station.
This was where Darrel discovered that Phyllis was ill, collapsing in a"fit of coughing" (Levy, Chapter 20), and he took her to St. John's Wood.
Amy Levy chose this location for the novel because In the 19th century, Charing Cross junction was already the “centre” (center) of the London metropolis. The train station there had great international importance, becoming the main departure point from London to abroad. It was a location that her characters were most likely to use to travel abroad.
