Daemonologie

The game "Daemonologie" was released October 1, 2024 by Oro Interactive. It is a short folk horror story influenced by the Scottish witch trials of the late 1600s. The description of the game on Steam reads, "You play the role of a witch finder who has been summoned to the small Scottish village to uproot the witch that resides there. You must speak to the locals and sort their truths from their lies. If they are not willing to communicate then you have permission to employ further methods of persuasion. At the end of each day you will experience prophetic, stop-motion style nightmares. While cryptic, they may provide you with some hidden truths." One can either rely on witness testemonies or resort to gruesome methods of torture to extract the truth. The truth of the game is revealed only after careful investigation and mulitple run throughs: there was never a witch at all. The game situates the reader as a perpetrator of horror, representing the true terror and reality of the witch trials.

The aesthetic of the game is highly influenced by gothic themes. Foggy, desolate forests, decrepit homes and chruches. The atmosphere is dark, quiet, and mysterious with a lingering sense that someone, or something, is always lurking in the shadows. The game alludes to the societal fears of the unknown and powers beyond humanity's control. There is betrayal, suspicion, and ghostly apparitions that cause you to mistrust everyone you meet. Everyone seems to be, in some way, implicated in witchcraft, but none of them are. However, you must make a decision of who to execute. All out of fear. The art is highly detailed and grotesque, with prominent blacks and greys, adding to the gloomy atmosphere.
