Devon is a real county in England known for its port cities, most notably Exeter, Plymouth, and Dartmouth. As a coastal county, Exeter did not reach the same levels of industrialization as more major urban areas of England did during the industrial revolution, and instead remained largely agricultural. Due to its picturesque coastline, especially the Jurassic Coast, which has revealed a large amount of fossils spanning hundreds of millions of years, tourism is another important industry in Devon. The first mentions of Devon in The Remains of the Day are in the prologue, when Stevens is looking through a book about Devon and Cornwall to try and "gain some sense of the sort of place Miss Kenton had gone to live her married life" (pg. 11).
