J.K. Rowling.

(EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND)

Rowling's life progressed in a positive manner after leaving Porto, Portugal with her daughter Jessica. She took this time to work on herself and to become more stable since she had hit rock bottom. The two moved to Scotland in December, 1993. She had only one suitcase which contained the first three chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which she had been working on for the past three years (“J.K. Rowling”). She was still quite emotional when looking back on the death of her mother and her recent split. She was now divorced, August 1994, depressed, and broke (Hall). She struggled to support her daughter Jessica and herself, barely making it by on welfare. She continued to write during her free time, aiming to finish the first book in the Harry Potter series (Biography). Everything was looking up for Rowling since she acuired a training position so that she could be a teacher at Edinburgh University ("Timeline"). Scotland was a place harboring good things for Rowling and her writing; therefore, it must be recognized in relation to her life and her writing. She ended up acquiring a job and taught in the schools while at the same time she kept writing. Rowling ended up completingthe manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in July 1995 ("J.K. Rowling"). She still resided in this town with her daughter, again I mentioned that this was a safe haven for Rowling and some of the best things happened to her during her time in Edinburgh. The best thing that happened to her was after she sent the first three chapters to the literary agents in January 1996. She recieved dozens of denial letters; however, one person took notice of her writing and that was Bryony Evens from Christopher Little Literary Agency. She requested the rest of the manuscript after reading it in February and then the rest is history for Rowling (“J.K. Rowling”). Rowling was then met with offers regarding a contract, along with a deal from Scholastic, Warner Bros., etc.
