London is the capital city of the United Kingdom and previously Great Britian. Evidence of bronze age technology suggests that London was a very early civilization around 1750 BCE possibly, though this is not certain. London was officially established by the Romans around 47 AD due to its location next to the River Thames (rivers being where most early cities were located near). London has a long history as a cultural and economic center for the British Isles, and it is one of the largest cities in the world today. Being the capital of what was once the largest empire in the world and one of the largest in history it makes since that this city has also been through major strife. Whether it be the many wars fought between royals for power or the common bombings of London during World War 2, to attack London is seen as attacking the country as a whole.
“a taxi driver in New York regularly addressed his fare in a manner which if repeated in London would end in some sort of fracas, if not in the fellow being frogmarched to the nearest police station.” this quote shows how different and proper Stevens views British culture over the Americans
