Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan, located in the southeast of the country on the island of Honshū. It is an active volcano and last erupted in 1707-08. It is one of Japan’s Three Holy Mountains. The Taiseki-ji temple complex, the headquarters of Nichiren Shōshū Buddhism, is located on the mountain’s slopes. Non-Japanese visitors first began to climb Mount Fuji in 1868, and it remains a popular site for mountain climbing.
