Robin Wall Kimmerer spent her time learning the Potawatomi language through sticky notes placed in every place of her home and attending online language classes. The online language classes were originated in Oklahoma where there are 9 Native Americans from the Potawatomi tribe. During 1838, the Potawatomi tribe were condensed and removed from their homes in both Kansas and Indiana. During their separation and condensation of their homes, the children of the Potawatomi were taken from their homes and dealt with forced assimilation and their native language being beaten out of them. The children of the tribe were forced to learn English and to conform with English society. Over time the Potawatomi tribe and their different reservations created and uphold constitutional rights within coexisting with the American government. "While Tribal members outside of Oklahoma could vote via absentee ballot, they could not propose candidates who resided within their regions to represent their interests" (Constitutional Reform). To this day Potawatomi traditions are held onto by the members of their tribes in different districts to maintain culture and history.
