Old Dominion university is a college in Norfolk, Virginia. Natalie Diaz attended Old Dominion university and graduated in 2000 and eventually completed her MFA in 2007 at Old Dominion. Natalie Diaz attended Old Dominion on a full athletic scholarship and played for the Lady Monarchs, the university women’s basketball team. While Diaz no longer attends Old Dominion and does not reside anywhere in the area, the University was incredibly impactful to her. It was at Old Dominion where she would launch her professional basketball career, being honored as the best female athlete at Old Dominion in her senior year. Despite no longer playing professionally, Diaz maintains her love for the game, even writing about the connection between sports and poetry in her essay “A Body of Athletics”. Old Dominion is also where she gained her masters in English that would help her go on to become the writer she is today.
