In Brick Lane, when Nazneen is looking for her daughter during a disturbance, she passes Whitechapel Road right before seeing that the police have blocked off the street that she needs to go through in order to find her daughter. Whitechapel Road is a major street in the East End of London which is heavily populated and includes a prominent shopping district. In the late 20th century, it became known as a location where many British Bangladeshi people formed a community. This aspect of the road's history is reflected in Brick Lane, which focuses on the experiences of Bangladeshi people, specifically Nazneen and her family, in London.
"Nazneen ran down the slope and caught the green man at the crossing on Whitechapel Road." (Chapter 21)
