For my paticular portion of the project I chose to create our map. Since one of the major plot points in Gilman's short story is her mental health struggle following birth. The focus of this map will be to identify sanitarums opperatting during this period in the US. For background, women were often put in sanitariums following tramatic events like birth, resulting in what we know as post-partum depression. This was often looked down upon by others, specifically men, because there was little research available on it at the time. Psychiatry was often used to control and oppression women in Victorian society. According to a 2017 article from The Atlantic, father's and husbands would often hire psychiatrists to examine and diagnose their wives and daughters. There were some unconventional approaches to this such as prescribing masturbation to help treat was was known as hysteria. Some women were even subjected to genital mutilation and were often given exstensive amounts of shock-therapy.
