Ypres is a town in Belgium that became one of the most important battle sites of World War I. Because of the fact that it's location is near the Western Front, several major battles were faught there between the Allied and Gernam forces, including the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. It was this battle that poison gas was first used in war. The continuous fighting that happened here destroyed the majority of the town and caused numerous casualties. Ypres is important to World War I becasue kof the fact that it held some of the deadliest and most brutal fighting of the war.

This town relates directly to Dulce et Decorum Est because the poem describes a poison attack very similiar to the ones that became known to have been associated with battles at and around Ypres. In the poem, Wilfred Owen sets the tone to reveal the panic, trauma, and pain that a lot of the soldeirs experienced during the gas attacks, which ends up helping readers understand a lot of the horrors that towns like Ypres became known for during the war.
