Dear George,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits. As I pondered over what gift to present to you, my mind was immediately drawn to this exquisite edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam: 1951 Shakespeare House Sullivan Edition. It seemed to me that its beautiful art and profound words were meant to be cherished by someone as discerning and appreciative as you.

As I held this book in my hands, I couldn't help but be captivated by its physical features, each of which seemed to whisper the story of its creation and journey. Firstly, the cover, with a lovely brick red cover with a leather spine. Along with its gilded pages along the sides of the book, over time it has faded but there remains one side that still possesses this beauty. There is also a gold embossed stamp of Shakespeare on the cover of this edition, one of which is worn but you can very much tell it is Shakespeare. 

Secondly, the intricate illustrations by Edmund J. Sullivan caught my eye, with their meticulous details and striking portrayal of Eastern aesthetics. I recall our conversations about art and how you've often marveled at the ability of visuals to evoke emotions and transport us to different realms. I chose this edition specifically for the way these illustrations breathe life into Omar Khayyam's poetic verses, enhancing the reading experience and inviting us to immerse ourselves in the beauty of his words. I know that you recently received your degree in Art and line work was something that you specialized in, I thought you would appreciate the etchings that Sullivan has created.

One of the stanzas that deeply resonated with me is, "For in the Market-place, One Dusk of Day, I watch'd the Potter thumping his wet Clay." It reminded me of the importance of gentleness and mindfulness in our own lives, especially during times of uncertainty and change. This stanza encapsulates the fleeting nature of existence and serves as a gentle reminder to savor every moment, just as we have cherished our friendship over the years.

In gifting you this edition, I wanted to share not only the poetic wisdom of Omar Khayyam but also the story behind the book itself. Through my research, I discovered that Shakespeare House, the publisher of this edition, was known for its dedication to producing beautifully illustrated volumes. The attention to detail and high-quality production value of this book aligns with your own appreciation for craftsmanship and artistic expression. Not only this, but the edition just fits nicely in the palm of your hand, you know how much I appreciate a book that has a nice weight and feel to it.

Lastly, as I perused the pages, I came across a bookplate featuring a memorial fund for Oregon State University. It seems to be in memory of one Dr. Sigurd H. Peterson, I wonder what he did to have such a wonderful edition donated in his name, and why it is not with the university anymore. It made me think of the many hands this book has passed through, and the countless hearts it has touched. And now, it is my privilege to pass it into your hands, where I know it will be cherished and appreciated for years to come.

In closing, I hope that this edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam serves as a constant source of inspiration and reflection for you. May its profound verses and exquisite illustrations transport you to a world of contemplation and beauty. I am reminded of another poignant line from Khayyam's poetry: "A book of verse beneath the bough, a flask of wine, a loaf of bread—and thou."
