Delhi

Delhi is a city and union territory of India, bordered by Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. In 1857, Delhi was the seat of the Mughal empire. In 1911, it was announced that capital of territories held by the British was to be transferred from Calcutta to Delhi. In 1927, the name “New Delhi” was given to the new capital which was inaugurated in 1937. After the country gained independence in 1947, New Delhi was officially declared as the capital of the Union of India.

No one from the royal family attended, though the Prince of Wales visited India, 1875-76, to test Indian attitudes toward Britain and the royal family. This event in Delhi celebrated the 1876 Royal Titles Bill and proclaimed Victoria Empress of India, officially translated as Kaiser-i-Hind. It was Organized by Viceroy George Curzon (Conservative) to celebrate the coronation of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra as Emperor and Empress of India. The king sent his brother the Duke of Connaught to Delhi represent the Crown.
