The Fleet prison was located on the bank of the river Fleet near Ludgate Hill in central London. Originally built in 1197, the prison was rebuilt several times before eventually closing in 1844. The prison was primarily used for debtors and bankrupts. It was demolished in 1846, and Ludgate Hill railway station was built on the site. Poet John Donne and Richard Hogarth—father of printmaker William Hogarth—were imprisoned for a time. In literature, Fleet prison features in Charles Dickens’s The Pickwick Papers and in William Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 2 when Falstaff is carried off to Fleet.
