Urania Cottage was a home for “fallen women” in Lime Grove, Shepherd’s Bush, London. It was founded by Angela Burdett-Coutts and Charles Dickens in 1846 as a home that would offer a sympathetic approach to the “redemption” of “fallen women.” Dickens found the house in Lime Grove, describing it in an 1847 letter as “retired, but cheerful. There is a little garden and a little lawn. The taxes are very low.” He took a hands-on interest in the home, finding and interviewing prospective residents in workhouses and prisons, and dictating the rules and discipline that the residents had to follow. The home eventually closed in 1862.
