An Affectionate Remembrance published in The Sporting Times
After the defeat of the English cricket team by Australia, Reginald Brooks published "An Affectionate Remembrance," a mock obituary on the loss in The Sporting Times on 2 September 1882. The article inaugurated the term “The Ashes” for cricket series held between England and Australia, a tradition that continues to this day.
