Leighton House

The Leighton House Museum is located in the affluent Holland Park district of west London. It was commissioned as a residence and studio by the artist Frederic Leighton and designed by the architect George Aitchison. Construction began in the 1860s, and the house has been open as a museum since 1929. The museum’s collection includes work by Leighton and various members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood founded

The brotherhood reacts, in part, against the use of bitumen, a transparent brown used for depicting exaggerated shadows, aiming instead to reproduce the sharp, brilliant colors found in fifteenth-century art.
