Dedication to Shakespeare's sonnets, reading, in all caps, "To the onlie begetter of these insuing sonnets Mr. W. H. all happinesse and that eternitie promised by our ever living poet wisheth the well-wishing adventurer in setting forth." It is signed "T. T."

In July 1889, "The Portrait of Mr. W. H." is published for the first time in Blackwoods Magazine. Wilde later drafted a longer version, which was subsequently lost and not published until 1921.
