Factories grew with no rules in regards to how to run the factory as the Industrial Revolution grew itself. The Factory Act was created to try to improve child conditions in the working factories. But this rule did not project adult male workers. “The basis of the act was as follows:
- No child workers under nine years of age
- Employers muct have an age certificate for their child workers
- Children of 9-13 years to work no more than nine hours a day
- Children of 13-18 years to work no more than 12 hours a day
- Children are not to work at night
- Two hours schooling each day for children
- Four factory inspectors appointed to enforce the law” (The National Archives).
This did not stop abuse that happend to the children. The way they kept the act from being avoided as much as possible, was by having a four man factory inspection. Although they could only do so much this was the start of government control in factories. The work and the amount of time spent in the factories were wearing on the bodies of the workers, esspecially the young. There are proofs of reports from an inspector, who had been told from one of the worker boys that he had worked from 6 Am Friday to 4 Pm Saturday with an hour break at midnight and meal hours. Factory owners protested teh act believing that it would decrease their business and ultimately cause their products to cost more.
In Charles Dickens Oliver Twist was brought up in a factory and had to deal with teh conditions. He was put away in isolation for asking for more food and hated ever since. When Oliver asked for more foodthe gentleman in the white waistcoat predicted that Oliver would be hung. The attendance did whatever they could to get rid of him even if it was by trying to give him to a man whose previous woring boy had died.
