Pompeii is an ancient Roman city that was destroyed by volcanic eruption from nearby Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Horatio offers to take Ethel and Edward to see the ruins, and Clorinda stays behind, because she "would find no pleasure in visiting a ruined city and fallen fragments" (259). He goes on to state that "One house in the Chiaja is worth fifty Pompeiis in the eyes of a Neapolitan, and Clorinda is one, heart and soul" (259). This difference in culture and interests continues to strain Horatio and Clorinda's marriage.
