Edward, Ethel, Horatio, and Clorinda make plans to visit Rome for Holy Week, but the trip is abruptly cancelled at Terracina when Clorinda attacks Horatio with a knife. Edward and Ethel carry on to Rome, while a melancholy Saville "watches their carriage from the inn at Terracina, as it skimmed along the level road of the Pontine Marshes" (264). Horatio and Clorinda return to Naples.
