Africa

Africa is the secont largest and most populated continent. It covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20% of its land area.

Africa is a continent that before WW2 was almost entirely colinized by European countries. However, in the years following WW2, it experienced a rapid decolonization. As a part of the Atlantic Charter, Winston Churchill and FDR said that they would "respect the right of all peoples to choose the form of government under which they will live; and the wish to see sovereign rights and self government restored to those who have been forcibly deprived of them." Another factor contributing to Africa's decolonization was after WW2, European nations were experiencing large amounts of debt, and thus could not afford everything necessary to keep control of their African colonies, leading to the colonies to have the power to negotiate their independence with little resistance.

Africa is referenced in The Remains of the Day on the first day when Mr. Stevens is contemplating the greatness of England. He says that England's greatness comes from her restrained beauty. He then contrasts this to America and Africa by saying that both of them are wild and exciting, yet the "object observer" would consider them inferior because they are demonstrative.
