Setting 2: After traveling on cattle cars, Eliezer's family arrive in Auschwitz where they become aware of labor camps. After being taken to the Birkenau part of Auschwitz, Eliezer's family is separated. His mother and sisters are taken away, leaving Eliezer and his father in Birkenau. Here, Eliezer and his father have to lie about their ages to pass Dr. Mengele's inspection. They are then thrown into the horrors of the camp where they are exposed to the crematoriums and the burnings of young children and individuals that weren't deemed fit for work. During his time here, Eliezer loses faith in God, finding it difficult to see him as a just figure for allowing these things to happen. At Auschwitz, they also recieve their number tattoos and are shed of their individual identities.
